Worldly attitude.... only love redeems....

The worldly attitude harbours the greatest danger for the soul, for it is held back from spiritual striving, it is demanded to take the body into consideration.... thus the will, the thinking and feeling of man is only directed towards creating all comforts for the body. And consequently the soul is prevented from willing the spirit within it, the spiritual is therefore disregarded and the soul either stops in its higher development or it regresses if the physical desire predominates and the human being turns more and more towards the world. For the spiritual realm will never be compatible with the earthly realm.... Worldly fulfilment will never bring salvation to the soul, man can never walk above and below at the same time, he will always have to do one at the expense of the other. And people do not consider this.... All their endeavours are directed towards the comfort of the body, and the soul must live in want as soon as the body's desire is fulfilled. But in what error do people walk when they believe that they fulfil their duties to God by following external ceremonies.... What God demands of people is a living faith in Himself and His word, which must also result in acting in accordance with the word of God. This word teaches the transience of everything earthly, and it gives knowledge of the meaning and purpose of life on earth and of the state of the soul after bodily death.... According to the word of God, life on earth must now be lived in order to shape the state of the soul after death into one full of light. And therefore everything that is earthly, i.e. transient, must be disregarded and only the imperishable soul must be considered as long as the human being remains on earth. However, the soul cannot develop progressively as long as it is prevented by physical desire from uniting with the spirit within itself. And the latter can only happen through working in love.... The neighbour must be considered more than one's own body, the human being must put aside his own "I" and be absorbed in loving his fellow human beings.... However, he who thinks only of himself is still so earthbound that it is difficult for him to detach himself from the earth.... Selfish love is the greatest obstacle to ascent, for selfish love is the opposite of neighbourly love, and only neighbourly love is truly redeeming, only neighbourly love signifies spiritual progress for the soul, and only neighbourly love shapes the human being in accordance with God's will. But every action that lacks neighbourly love is a purely formal act, something external that has no inner value and does not contribute in the slightest to the soul's transformation. Only love redeems, and if a person does not practice love, his soul will be lost for eternity....

세상적인 태도. 단지 사랑이 구원한다.

세상적인 태도는 혼에 가장 큰 위험을 준다. 왜냐하면 세상적인 태도는 영적인 추구를 하지 않기 때문이다. 이런 태도는 육체를 생각하는 일을 지원한다. 다시 말해 인간의 의지와 생각과 느낌이 단지 육체에게 모든 안락함을 주는 일에 집중된다. 결과적으로 혼은 자신 안에 있는 영을 돌보지 못하고, 영적인 존재에 주의를 기울이지 못한다. 혼은 자신의 더 높은 성장 과정에서 멈추거나, 또는 육체적 욕망이 우세해지고, 사람이 점점 더 세상을 향하게 되면, 혼은 퇴보를 한다. 왜냐면 영의 나라가 절대로 이 땅의 나라와 양립할 수 없기 때문이다. 혼의 세속적 성취는 절대로 구원으로 이어지지 않을 것이다. 인간은 절대로 위를 향해 동시에 아래를 향해 걸을 수 없다. 그는 항상 다른 하나를 희생하면서 하나를 행해야 하게 될 것이다. 사람들은 이점을 생각하지 않는다. 그들의 모든 추구는 육체의 안녕을 위한 것이고, 육체의 욕망이 성취되면, 혼은 굶주려야만 한다.

그러나 사람들이 외적인 의식을 수행할 때 하나님을 향한 의무를 다하고 있다고 믿는다면, 사람들이 어떤 오류에 빠져 살고 있는가! 하나님이 사람들에게 요구하는 일은 단지 자신을 생명력이 있게 믿고, 자신의 말씀을 생명력이 있게 믿는 일이다. 그러면 하나님의 말씀에 따라 살게 되는 결과를 가져와야만 한다. 이런 말씀은 모든 세상적인 것의 무상함을 가르치고, 이 땅의 삶의 의미와 목적에 대한, 육체의 죽음 후의 혼의 상태에 대한 깨달음을 준다. 죽은 후에 혼의 상태를 빛으로 만들기 위해서는 이제 하나님의 말씀에 따라 이 땅의 삶을 살아야만 한다. 그러므로 사람이 이 땅에서 사는 동안에, 모든 세상적인 것은, 다시 말해 사라지는 것 들에는 주의를 기울이지 말아야 하고, 단지 쇠하지 않는 혼에 주의를 기울여야 한다. 그러나 혼이 육체적 욕망에 의해 혼과 혼 안의 영과 연합하는 일에 방해를 받는 동안에는, 혼은 성장해 나갈 수 없다. 혼이 혼 안의 영과 연합하는 일은 단지 사랑을 행함을 통해 일어날 수 있다.

자신의 육체보다 이웃에게 더 많이 배려해야만 한다. 사람은 자신을 뒤로 하고, 자신의 이웃 사람을 사랑하는 일을 시작해야 한다. 그러나 단지 자신만을 생각하는 사람은 아직 이 땅에 묶여 있어, 이 땅으로부터 자유롭게 되는 일이 그에게 어렵다. 자기사랑은 높이 성장하는 일에 가장 큰 장애물이다. 왜냐면 자기 사랑은 이웃 사랑의 반대이고, 단지 이웃 사랑이 진정으로 구원해주고, 단지 이웃 사랑이 혼에게 영적 성장을 의미하고, 단지 이웃 사랑이 사람을 하나님의 뜻대로 형성하기 때문이다. 그러나 사랑이 결여된 모든 행동은 순전히 형식적인 행동이고, 내적인 가치가 없고, 혼의 변화에 최소한 기여도 하지 않는 외적인 행동이다. 단지 사랑이 구원한다. 사람이 사랑을 행하지 않으면, 그의 혼은 영원히 버림을 받는다.
