Love activity spiritual progress....

Everything that can be described as a labour of love is conducive to the soul's higher development, thus every labour of love is spiritual progress. But then also every overcoming of earthly desires as well as the resistance against all evil is to be seen as such, for the latter means a weakening of the opposing power and an increase of one's own strength. Man must inevitably reach the heights if he only longs upwards, towards God, and wants to escape the depths by believing in Jesus Christ, the divine saviour and conqueror of death. For anyone who asks God for strength in faith in Him will also receive it, and every influx of strength from God has to increase the soul's state of maturity and signify the being's spiritual advancement. And again only the strength of will is decisive as to whether the path upwards has to be travelled with great struggle or without a fight. For when the will is still weak the adversary also struggles to turn the will towards himself again and then it requires inner struggle to become master of the adversary. A strong will, i.e., a will which is unconditionally turned towards God, is not a field of attack for the adversary and therefore the spiritual resistance will not be so great. Yet the human being can easily overcome all opposition if he is active in love, for then God Himself will support him. He does a work for his neighbour which reduces his hardship, thus God distributes the same, He also reduces his hardship and helps where the human being is in danger of failing. And therefore the human being who is active in love must inevitably ascend, his state of soul must reach a certain maturity, for he is in love and therefore also in God,.... for God Himself is love....

Een werkzaamheid in liefde is geestelijke vooruitgang

Alles wat als de uitvoering van een werk van liefde bestempeld kan worden, is bevorderlijk voor de opwaartse ontwikkeling van de ziel. Zodoende is elk werk van liefde een geestelijke vooruitgang. Maar dan moet ook elk overwinnen van aardse begeerten, evenals het verzet tegen al het kwaad, als zodanig beschouwd worden, want het laatste betekent een verzwakking van de tegenstander en een vergroten van de eigen kracht.

En de mens moet onvermijdelijk opwaarts klimmen, als hij naar boven, naar God, verlangt en de diepte wil ontvluchten in het geloof in Jezus Christus, de goddelijke Verlosser en Overwinnaar van de dood. Want aan degene die in het geloof in Hem God om kracht vraagt, zal het ook gegeven worden en elke toevoer van kracht uit God moet de rijpheid van de ziel verhogen en voor het wezen de geestelijke verdere ontwikkeling betekenen.

En weer is alleen maar de sterkte van de wil doorslaggevend of de weg omhoog met grote strijd of zonder strijd afgelegd moet worden. Want bij een nog zwakke wil strijdt de tegenstander er ook om, om de wil weer op zichzelf te richten en dan vergt het een innerlijke strijd om de tegenstander de baas te worden. Een sterke wil, dat wil zeggen een wil die onvoorwaardelijk naar God toegekeerd is, is geen aanvalsdoel voor de tegenstander. En daarom zullen de geestelijke weerstanden niet zo groot zijn.

Maar de mens kan alle weerstand met gemak overwinnen, als hij in liefde werkzaam is, want dan helpt God hem Zelf. Hij verricht een werk voor de naaste, zodat diens nood vermindert. Daarom deelt God hetzelfde uit. Hij vermindert ook zijn nood en helpt daar, waar de mensen dreigen te falen. En daarom moet de mens, die in liefde werkzaam is, onvermijdelijk opwaarts klimmen. De staat van zijn ziel moet een bepaalde rijpheid krijgen, want hij staat in de liefde en is derhalve ook in God, want God is de liefde Zelf.
