Bearing the cross in patience and surrender....

Unlimited possibilities open up to the human being as long as he is willing to shape himself according to God's will, that is, as long as he consciously works on his soul. From the hour of realizing that his purpose on earth is the higher education of his soul, his earthly course is an endless series of opportunities where he can attain this spiritual maturity through self-conquest and active neighbourly love. And so his earthly life will bring trials from the very beginning in which he should prove himself.... Nor will it pass him by without a fight, but it is precisely in the struggle that his will will be strengthened and his strength increased. So life will appear to him to consist of opposition and hardship much sooner than he will be able to indulge in unclouded joy of life. These are the first cliffs on which his little ship of life must not be wrecked; he must steer it round all cliffs with a sure hand and with faithful trust in God, only then will he prove himself and utilize the opportunities for higher spiritual development. Jesus Christ Himself made it a task for people with the words: Whoever wants to follow Me must willingly take up his cross.... He does not say that He wants to take away their cross, that He wants to relieve them; on the contrary, He announces to them that following Jesus consists of bearing the cross that He imposes on people. The unspeakable suffering that Jesus Christ took upon Himself was the atonement for mankind's great guilt of sin. He bore His cross without grumbling or complaining. What He endured for mankind thus cancelled their guilt, as it were. Whoever wants to follow Jesus must therefore also atone for sinful humanity, i.e. bear the suffering that humanity has brought upon itself through sin. Love for one's fellow human being should now move the person to bear suffering for his sin, i.e. to reduce the guilt of sin through suffering and thereby be active on earth in a redeeming way. And the loving person will also always be willing to do so, for his soul knows about the downtrodden situation of those who are entangled in great guilt of sin and wants to help them. And therefore every loving person will not rebel against divine will if the latter imposes a cross on him and his earthly life no longer passes by in quiet peacefulness. He knows that an existence without a fight would not be suitable for the soul's higher development and thus he will not rebel either, even if the cross seems unbearable to him. And therefore the human being should not be despondent if his life appears to be more difficult than that of his fellow human being, yet God does not impose a heavier fate on the human being than he can endure, and it is the strength from God which makes this cross easier for him.... It is the supply of strength which man can consciously ask for, but which must also be asked for.... But then every cross, no matter how heavy it seems, is no longer as heavy a burden as before. But taking up the cross of Christ means submitting to everything that God sends upon man without grumbling or resistance. For the slightest resistance cancels out the working of divine power, and the human being must struggle hard so that he can remain victorious in the battle of life and already be able to be redemptively active on earth.... He only ever has to recognize God's love in all suffering, in the cross imposed on him, which wants to let the human being attain spiritual perfection and is the quickest and surest way to take up the cross in all patience and submission to God's will and to follow the divine lord and saviour....

Kreuztragung in Geduld und Ergebung....

Unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten erschließen sich dem Menschen, sofern er bereit ist, sich zu gestalten dem Willen Gottes gemäß, sofern er also bewußt arbeitet an seiner Seele. Von der Stunde des Erkennens an, daß sein Erdenzweck die Höherbildung seiner Seele ist, ist sein Erdenlauf eine endlose Reihe von Gelegenheiten, wo er durch Selbstüberwindung und tätige Nächstenliebe diese geistige Reife erlangen kann. Und also wird sein Erdenleben von Stund an Prüfungen bringen, in denen er sich bewähren soll.... Es wird auch nicht mehr kampflos an ihm vorübergehen, sondern gerade im Kampf wird sein Wille gestählt und seine Kraft vermehrt werden. Also wird viel eher das Leben ihm aus Widerständen und Nöten bestehend erscheinen, als daß er sich ungetrübter Lebensfreude hingeben könnte. Es sind dies die ersten Klippen, an denen sein Lebensschifflein nicht zerschellen darf; er muß es mit sicherer Hand und im gläubigen Vertrauen auf Gott um alle Klippen geleiten, dann erst bewährt er sich und nützet die Möglichkeiten zur geistigen Höherentwicklung. Jesus Christus hat es Selbst den Menschen zur Aufgabe gemacht mit den Worten: Wer Mir nachfolgen will, der muß willig sein Kreuz auf sich nehmen.... Er sagt nicht, daß Er ihm sein Kreuz nehmen will, das Er sie entlasten will; Er kündet ihnen im Gegenteil an, daß die Nachfolge Jesu darin besteht, das Kreuz zu ertragen, daß Er den Menschen auferlegt. Das unsägliche Leid, das Jesus Christus auf Sich nahm, war die Sühne für die große Sündenschuld der Menschheit. Er trug Sein Kreuz ohne Murren und Klagen. Was Er für die Menschheit erduldete, tilgte also gleichsam deren Schuld. Wer Jesus nachfolgen will, muß also gleichfalls für die sündige Menschheit büßen, d.h. Leid tragen, das die Menschheit durch die Sünde auf sich geladen hat. Die Liebe zum Mitmenschen soll nun den Menschen bewegen, für dessen Sünde Leid zu tragen, d.h., durch Leid die Sündenschuld verringern und dadurch erlösend tätig zu sein auf Erden. Und es wird der liebende Mensch auch stets bereit sein dazu, denn seine Seele weiß um die geknechtete Lage derer, die in großer Sündenschuld verstrickt sind, und möchte ihnen helfen. Und daher wird jeder in der Liebe stehende Mensch sich nicht auflehnen gegen den göttlichen Willen, so dieser ihm ein Kreuz auferlegt und sein Erdenleben nun nicht mehr in stiller Friedlichkeit dahingeht. Er weiß es, daß zur Höherentwicklung der Seele ein kampfloses Dasein nicht tauglich wäre, und also lehnt er sich auch nicht auf, und ob ihm gleich das Kreuz untragbar erscheint. Und darum soll der Mensch nicht verzagt sein, so sein Leben anscheinend schwerer ist als das des Mitmenschen, jedoch es legt Gott dem Menschen kein schwereres Los auf, als dieser ertragen kann, und es ist die Kraft aus Gott, die ihm dieses Kreuz leichter werden läßt.... Es ist die Kraftzufuhr, die der Mensch bewußt erbeten kann, die aber eben auch erbeten werden muß.... Dann aber ist jedes noch so schwer scheinende Kreuz keine so schwere Last mehr als zuvor. Das Kreuz Christi auf sich nehmen heißt aber ohne Murren und Widerrede sich in alles fügen, was Gott über den Menschen schickt. Denn der kleinste Widerstand hebt das Wirken der göttlichen Kraft auf, und es muß der Mensch schwer ringen, auf daß er in dem Lebenskampf Sieger bleiben und schon auf Erden erlösend tätig sein kann.... Er muß nur immer in allem Leid, in dem Kreuz, das ihm auferlegt ist, die Liebe Gottes erkennen, die den Menschen zur geistigen Vollkommenheit gelangen lassen möchte und der schnellste und sicherste Weg ist, in aller Geduld und Ergebung in Gottes Willen das Kreuz auf sich zu nehmen und dem göttlichen Herrn und Heiland nachzufolgen....
