Waakzaamheid tegenover de vijand van de zielen

U zult waakzaam moeten zijn, dat u niet het slachtoffer gaat worden van de vijand van uw zielen. Want hij is er voortdurend op bedacht u op een dwaalspoor te brengen en u door allerlei verblindende middelen van de juiste weg af te brengen. Hij komt ook in het gewaad van een leider en hij probeert zo uw vertrouwen te winnen. Hij belooft u zeker naar het doel te leiden, maar zijn doel is de wereld, dus belooft hij u aardse voordelen, hulp in aardse benauwenis. Hij tracht de paden voor u te effenen, maar alles onder één voorwaarde: uw ziel aan hem af te staan, dus uw geestelijke vermogens en gedachten los te maken van God, van het geestelijk streven. En al zijn beloften zullen daden van liefdeloosheid vragen. Ieder mens die zich aardse voordelen wil verschaffen, zal er niet toe in staat zijn als hij in de liefde wil leven. Dus moet hij het ene of het andere opgeven. Hij moet weten dat hij zijn ziel zal verkopen als hij zich zijn aardse leven tot een leven in welvaart wil maken.

Hij moet weten dat elke poging daartoe gebeurt op aansporen van diegene die de ziel wil verderven. En hij moet waakzaam zijn. Hij moet zijn toevlucht nemen tot God, opdat Hij hem zal beschermen tegen de invloed van de vijand. Hij moet vragen om versterking van zijn wil ten gunste van het goede en om af te zien van aardse goederen. Want als u zich ook een aards leven in welstand en behaaglijkheid verschaft, voor wat verruilt u dit? Alleen voor een ondraaglijk lot voor de ziel in het rijk hierna. Want komt de tijd van nood over u, dan heeft dat ook zijn wijze betekenis en bedoeling, zolang hij door God zelf is toegelaten.

Maar de vijand van uw ziel stelt juist in de tijd van nood alles in het werk: hij probeert uw denken en streven nu daarop te richten, wat u aan aardse goederen ontbreekt. Hij tracht uw hebzucht daarnaar te versterken en uw gedachten in beslag te nemen. En alleen de kracht van uw wil beschermt u daartegen. Want wat hij belooft is alleen maar begoocheling. Het is slechts die weinige dagen van uw aardse bestaan nuttig voor u, waarna u verzinkt in een niets en u uw zielen achterlaat in uiterste armoede.

Zie vrijwillig af van datgene wat alleen het lichaam gelukkig maakt, maar de ziel geen voordeel oplevert. Laat uw lichaam op aarde in soberheid leven en bedenk in plaats daarvan uw ziel met geestelijk goed dat onvergankelijk is en dat u na zal volgen in de eeuwigheid. Wees waakzaam tegenover alle verzoekingen en blijf bidden. Vraag om kracht en genade en versterking van uw wil. En uw verlangens zullen minder worden. De aardse goederen zullen u niet meer zo aanlokkelijk voorkomen. U zult weerstand kunnen bieden aan alle influisteringen van de vijand en als compensatie geestelijk goed in ontvangst kunnen nemen, dat uw ziel duizend maal gelukkiger maakt, omdat het u het eeuwige leven oplevert.

Vigilance against the enemy of souls....

You should be vigilant so that you do not fall prey to the enemy of your souls, for he is constantly intent on leading you astray and pushing you off the right path by all kinds of deceptive means. He also comes in the guise of a guide and thus tries to gain your trust; he promises to lead you safely to your goal, yet his goal is the world.... thus he promises you earthly advantages, help in earthly distress, he tries to pave the way for you, but all under one condition.... to surrender your soul to him, that is, to detach your senses and thoughts from God, from spiritual striving. And all his promises will demand deeds of heartlessness; every person who wants to gain earthly advantages will not be able to do so if he wants to live in love. Thus, he has to give up one or the other, he has to know that he is selling his soul if he wants to shape his earthly life into a life of well-being.... He must know that every attempt to do so is at the instigation of the one who wants to corrupt the soul. And he must be vigilant.... He must take refuge in God that He may protect him from the influence of the enemy, he must ask for strengthening of his will to do good and to renounce earthly goods.... For what do you exchange if you also create an earthly life for yourselves in prosperity and comfort? Only an unbearable fate for the soul in the kingdom beyond. For if the time of adversity comes upon you, it also has its wise meaning and purpose as long as it is permitted by God Himself. But the enemy of your soul pulls the lever precisely in the time of trouble.... He now tries to direct your thoughts and intentions towards what you lack in earthly goods, he tries to increase your greed for it and to capture your thoughts and only the strength of your will protects you from this. For what he promises is just a sham, it only benefits you for the few days of your earthly life only to then sink into nothingness and leave your souls in utmost poverty. Voluntarily renounce that which only makes the body happy but is of no benefit to the soul, live on earth in the poverty of the body and in return provide your souls with spiritual possessions which are everlasting and will follow you into eternity. Be vigilant against all temptations and remain in prayer. Ask for strength and grace and strengthening of your will. And your desire will decrease, earthly possessions will no longer seem so tempting to you, you will be able to resist all the enemy's whisperings and receive spiritual possessions as compensation, which will make your souls a thousand times happier because they will earn you eternal life....
