Gebed voor de zielen in het hiernamaals die op aarde geen liefde hebben verworven

De lijdensweg van een niet verloste ziel is de mensen niet te beschrijven. En toch moeten ze weten dat het een onvoorstelbaar troosteloze toestand is die ze moet verdragen. En dit weten moet de mensen ertoe aanzetten zulke zielen hulpvaardig bij te staan en daarom gaat naar hen steeds weer de aanmaning uit deze zielen niet te vergeten. Ze zijn de mensen duizendvoudig dankbaar die hun in hun kwelling hulp brengen door voor hen te bidden. De zielen in het hiernamaals die bij hun overlijden mensen op aarde achterlaten met wie ze in liefde waren verbonden, zijn in het voordeel tegenover diegenen die op aarde geen liefde hebben verworven. De eersten volgen lieve gedachten en vrome wensen na, of door innig gebed voor zulke zielen wordt hun kracht toegestuurd en hun toestand kan zich daardoor aanzienlijk verbeteren. Elke liefdevolle gedachte wordt door de zielen als weldadig ervaren en wekt weer liefde op die zich nu uit tegenover de eveneens lijdende zielen. Maar de zielen die op aarde zonder liefde hebben geleefd, moeten leven in onuitsprekelijk gebrek en lijden. Zij zijn snel vergeten, of er wordt aan hen gedacht in liefdeloosheid en dit heeft een vreselijke uitwerking op hun toestand in het hiernamaals. Elke goede gedachte van de mensen op aarde aan de zielen in het hiernamaals verzacht hun kwellingen. Elke slechte gedachte vergroot ze. En de zielen zelf kunnen zich niet verweren of liefde van de mensen voor zichzelf afdwingen. Nu heeft dus de liefde of de liefdeloosheid een voelbare uitwerking en verlicht of bemoeilijkt de ziel het worstelen om opwaarts te komen.

Zielen die de liefde van de mensen op aarde helemaal moeten ontberen, zijn in de duistere omgeving alleen op zichzelf aangewezen. En hun nood is onuitsprekelijk groot. Aan deze zielen moet op aarde in het bijzonder worden gedacht in gebed, zodat zij de zegen van de voorspraak voelen. Dat ze de kracht van de liefde ervaren en er daardoor een verandering in hen plaatsvindt. Want zodra een liefdevolle gedachte zulke eenzame zielen even beroert, letten ze op en ze wenden zich naar de plaats vanwaar die gedachten uitgingen. Ze komen in de nabijheid van de mens die vol erbarmen aan hen heeft gedacht en slaan hem en zijn wezen, zijn handelen en zijn gedachtegang gade. Ze zullen ook nooit een mens in het nauw brengen die hun goed doet, ofschoon zij zelf maar tot weinig goede opwellingen in staat zijn. Doch ze piekeren over de reden ervan dat de toestand van hun lijden in de nabijheid van die mensen afneemt en zij door het gebed voor de worstelende zielen in de duisternis voelbare verlichting bespeuren. En ze leren inzien dat de liefde het enige middel is om hun toestand te verbeteren. En heeft de ziel dit inzicht verworven, dan wordt ze fijngevoelig en hulpvaardig, ook tegenover de andere zielen, en ze is de bitterste nood ontvlucht.

De mensen op aarde kunnen oneindig veel zielen verlossen uit hun nood, wanneer ze proberen zich de hulpeloosheid van deze zielen voor te stellen. Want als ze een vonkje liefde in zich voelen, moet dat grote leed hun aan het hart gaan en hun wil aansporen deze zielen te helpen. De mensen moeten in hun gebed deze arme zielen opnemen bij welke het aan kracht ontbreekt zichzelf te helpen. Ze moeten God aanroepen om genade en erbarmen voor deze zielen. Zij moeten ze hun liefde doen toekomen en nooit in liefdeloosheid aan een overledene denken om diens kwellingen niet te vergroten. Want de ziel is dan in het grootste gevaar dat ze geheel verhardt en elke goede opwelling in haar langzaam ophoudt. Maar de zielen moeten worden verlost en de mensen op aarde kunnen daartoe onuitsprekelijk veel bijdragen.

Prayers for souls in the beyond which had not acquired love on earth....

An unredeemed soul's path of suffering is impossible to describe to people, and yet they should know that it must endure an inconceivably hopeless state because this knowledge is intended to impel people into helpfully supporting such souls, hence they are constantly admonished not to forget these souls. They will thank those people a thousand fold who ease their agony by praying for them. Souls in the beyond which leave people behind on earth with whom they were lovingly connected have an advantage compared to those which did not acquire love for themselves on earth. Loving thoughts and devout wishes follow the former, or such souls receive strength through heartfelt prayer, which can substantially improve their situation. Every loving thought is soothingly experienced by the souls and awakens love again, which then will manifest itself towards equally suffering souls. However, souls which lived without love on earth must starve and suffer unspeakably. They are quickly forgotten or they are only thought of unkindly, and this has appalling consequences on their state in the beyond. Every kind thought of people on earth for the souls in the beyond alleviates their torments, every bad thought increases them and the souls themselves are unable to defend themselves or enforce people's love for them.

Now the soul is perceptively affected by love or heartlessness which either ease or impede its struggle towards ascent. Souls which entirely lack people's love on earth have to completely depend on themselves in utterly dark surroundings and suffer indescribable hardship. These souls should be particularly considered on earth in prayer so that they, too, feel the blessing of intercession, so that they feel the strength of love within themselves and thus an inner change takes place. For as soon as a loving thought fleetingly touches such lonely souls they notice it and turn towards the place of origin of this thought, they come close to the person who mercifully thought of them and observe him and his characteristics, his actions and his train of thought. They will never harass a person who is good to them either, although they themselves are rarely capable of good feelings. Yet they dwell on the reason why their state of suffering eases when they are close to these people and they sense noticeable relief through the prayer on behalf of the struggling souls in darkness. And they learn to recognise that love is the only means for improving their situation. And once the soul has gained this realisation then it will also become gentle and helpful towards other souls and they will have escaped the bitterest hardship. People on earth would be able to redeem infinitely many souls from their hardship if they tried to imagine the helplessness of these souls. For if they feel a spark of love within themselves their great suffering should move them and arouse their will to help these souls. People should include these poor souls which lack the strength to help themselves in their prayer, they should call upon God for grace and mercy for these souls, they shall give them their love and never think heartlessly of a deceased person so as not to increase his pain. For then the soul will be in great danger of becoming completely hard and every good inclination in it dying.... But the souls should be redeemed and people on earth can contribute an awful lot towards achieving it....
