Geest en lichaam proberen de ziel te winnen

Geest en lichaam hebben dat ene gemeenschappelijk, dat ze de ziel willen bezitten. Dat ze deze vorm trachten te geven, maar op verschillende manieren. Het lichaam probeert de ziel aangepast aan de wereld te vormen, omdat het zelf de wereld voorkomt als het enige dat waard is om naar te streven, en het dus zijn verlangen probeert over te dragen op de ziel. De geest daarentegen heeft een ander doel dat waard is om naar te streven. Hij wil het geestelijke rijk verdienen en hij tracht de ziel in overeenstemming met dit rijk vorm te geven. Hij tracht haar dus te vormen op een andere manier, volgens goddelijke wil. Dus staat de goddelijke wil het verlangen van het lichaam in de weg.

Het lichaam streeft naar de materie. De geest daarentegen is volledig onttrokken aan de materie. Zijn willen en streven geldt alleen de aanpassing aan de eeuwige Godheid. Hij kent alleen één verlangen: de aaneensluiting met God en de eeuwige staat vol van licht. Dus probeert hij ook de ziel te bewegen zich bij zijn verlangen aan te sluiten. Hij tracht haar ertoe te brengen hetzelfde te willen. Hij trekt de ziel in zekere zin naar zich toe en maakt haar bijgevolg los van de wereld, wat voor het lichaam het opgeven van zijn wensen betekent, dus een overwinnen van de materie, de wereld die het tegenovergestelde is van de geestelijke wereld.

Lukt het de geest de ziel te winnen voor het geestelijke rijk, dan heeft de ziel de proef van haar aardse leven doorstaan. Want dit betekent een toekeren van de wil naar God en een afkeren van diegene die heer van de wereld is. Het lichaam behoort weliswaar nog toe aan deze wereld, doch als het zich aansluit bij het verlangen van de ziel, dus gewillig toegeeft als deze zich met de geest wil verenigen, zijn ook de geestelijke substanties waaruit het lichaam bestaat, rijp voor de volgende vormverandering en ze leggen de ontwikkelingsgang in de vorm aanzienlijk sneller af, omdat ze hun weerstand hebben opgegeven. De geest in de mens heeft het lichaam overwonnen en dit heeft zich overwonnen verklaard.

Het lichaam heeft de ziel aan de geest toevertrouwd, dus de geest heeft geheel bezit genomen van de ziel. De ziel heeft zich verenigd met de geest en nu wordt al het denken, voelen en willen alleen door de geest bepaald. En het moet dus juist zijn, want de geest is een deeltje van God en hij zal de ziel er steeds toe brengen dat te doen en te denken, wat overeenstemt met de wil van God. En dit is de staat waar de ziel naar moet streven: in vereniging met de geest God tegemoet treden en de aaneensluiting met Hem nastreven, om in het aanschouwen van God de eeuwige gelukzaligheid te zoeken en te vinden.

Mind and body seek to win the soul....

Spirit and body have one thing in common, that they want to possess the soul, that they seek to mould it, but in different ways. The body tries to mould the soul according to the world because the world itself seems to be the only thing worth striving for and therefore it tries to transfer its desire to the soul. The spirit, on the other hand, has a different desirable goal; it wants to occupy the spiritual realm and seeks to mould the soul according to this realm; it therefore seeks to shape it in a different way.... according to the divine will. Thus the divine will is opposed to the desire of the body.... The body strives for matter, whereas the spirit is completely removed from matter.... Its will and endeavours are only aimed at aligning itself with the eternal divinity, it only knows one desire, the union with God and the eternally light-filled state. Thus it also tries to determine the soul to join its desire, it tries to induce it to the same will, it draws the soul to itself, so to speak, and thus detaches it from the world, which for the body means giving up its desires, thus overcoming matter, the world, which is the opposite of the spiritual world. If the spirit succeeds in winning the soul for the spiritual kingdom, then the soul has passed its test of earthly life, for this means a turning of the will towards God and a turning away from the one who is lord of the world. The body still belongs to this world but if it joins the desire of the soul, thus willingly yields, if it wants to unite with the spirit, the spiritual substances, of which the body consists, are also ripe for the next moulding, and they cover the course of development in form considerably faster because they have given up their resistance. The spirit in man has overcome the body, and the body has declared itself defeated.... The body has left the soul to the spirit, thus the spirit has taken complete possession of the soul, the soul has united with the spirit. And now all thinking, feeling and willing is only determined by the spirit, and it must therefore be right, for the spirit is part of God and it will always determine the soul to do and think that which corresponds to God's will. And this is the state the soul should strive for.... in union with the spirit towards God and strive for union with Him in order to seek and find eternal bliss in the contemplation of God....
