세상의 환경, 능력과 지식은 혼의 성장과는 관련이 없다.

혼이 육신을 입고 세상의 어떤 환경에서 사는 지가 그의 혼이 높이 성장하는 일에 중요하지 않다. 사람이 세상적인 능력을 얼마나 가지고 있는지, 어느 수준의 세상 지식을 가지고 있는지도 중요하지 않다. 사람은 세상적으로 높은 우수성을 가질 수 있고, 사람은 세상의 모든 분야에서 능력이 우수할 수 있다. 사람은 높은 수준의 지식을 가질 수 있다. 그러나 이런 사람이, 영적으로는, 비록 세상적인 우수성을 전혀 갖지 못했지만, 영적으로 아주 높이 성장한 사람보다 훨씬 더 부족할 수 있다.

실제로 모든 세상적인 우수성이 없는 사람에게서 종종 더 영적인 성숙함을 가진 사람을 볼 수 있다. 왜냐하면 이런 사람들은 내면적이고, 하나님과 더 연합이 되어 있기 때문이다. 그리고 그들이 혼에 대한 작업을 하는 일에, 어떠한 외적인 영향을 받지 않기 때문이다. 잘 양육된 혼이 단지 잘 양육된 육체 안에 거할 것이라는 인상을 얻을 수 있고, 진리가 가르쳐지고, 받아들여지는 곳에서만 단지 진리가 있을 것이라는 인상을 얻을 수 있다.

그리고 사람의 높게 또는 적게 발전시킨 이성의 생각에 따라, 지식의 수준이 다를 것이라는 인상을 얻을 수 있다. 그러나 겉보기에는 장점과 같은 것들이 그의 성장을 의심스럽게 만드는 방해가 될 수 있다. 평소에 날카롭게 논리적으로 생각하는 사람이 영적인 분야에서는 가장 큰 오류를 주장할 수 있다. 그러나 오류는 영적인 성장을 절대로 도와줄 수 없고, 단지 사랑하는 삶만이 성장을 이루게 한다.

그러므로 사람이 세상적으로 인정받는 우수성을 가져야 할 필요가 없이, 영적으로 아주 높은 단계에 이를 수 있다. 왜냐하면 그 안에 사랑이 거하고, 이 사랑이 그를 진정하게 높이기 때문이다. 세상적으로 아주 미미하고 낮은 위치에 있는 사람이 하나님을 섬기려는 의지가 아주 강하게 성장되어 있을 수 있다. 이런 의지가 영원한 사랑인 하나님을 모시기 때문이다. 이 사랑이 그를 돕거나, 그의 혼을 도와 먼저 영적인 성장을 하게 한다.

그러므로 잘 양육된 혼이 자신의 관심을 영적인 체험과 세상적인 체험으로 나누지 않는 사람보다 휠씬 빠르게 성장할 수 있다. 그는 어느 정도 쉽게 성장을 이루게 된다. 왜냐하면 외적인 시련들이 그에게 그렇게 심하지 영향을 미치지 않기 때문이다. 반면에 특별한 능력을 소유하고, 이 능력을 자신의 혼의 구원을 위해 사용하지 않는 세상사람은 이런 사람보다 휠씬 더 뒤쳐질 수 있다.

Earthly environment, skills and knowledge irrelevant to the maturing of the soul....

The environment in which the soul lives through its embodiment on earth is irrelevant to its higher development. It is also completely irrelevant which earthly abilities the human being possesses and on which level he stands in earthly knowledge. A person can have the highest earthly merits, he can be well versed in all earthly fields and abilities, he can also have a high degree of knowledge, and yet he can be significantly lower spiritually than a person who does not have all these merits in earthly life and is spiritually very highly developed; indeed, spiritual maturity is often far more recognizable where all earthly merits are eliminated, for these people are more inward and more connected to God because they are not affected in their soul's work by any external influences. It sometimes seems as if a well-formed soul can only dwell in a well-formed body, as if truth can only be where wisdom is taught or received, and as if the degree of knowledge depends on a person's more or less highly developed intellectual thinking, and yet precisely these apparent advantages can be an obstacle which calls the human being's maturing into question.... A person whose thinking is otherwise sharp and logical can make the greatest errors in spiritual matters, but error will never lead to spiritual progress. Only a life of love brings such progress, and therefore a person does not need to have any worldly recognized advantages and can still stand on a very high spiritual level because love is inherent in him, but only love truly elevates a person. The will to serve God can be just as strongly developed in a person who is earthly quite small and lowly, for precisely this will attracts God as eternal love, but this first helps the person or his soul to spiritual maturity, and thus a well-formed soul can develop far more easily in a person who does not divide his attention between spiritual and earthly experiences. He has it a little easier, so to speak, because the temptations from outside do not assail him in such a way, whereas the man of the world who has extraordinary abilities but does not use them for the salvation of his soul can lag far behind that soul....
