No one will enter the kingdom of heaven who pays homage to the world....

To pay tribute to the world is to forfeit the kingdom of heaven, since the human being cannot gain both at the same time. And anyone who pays homage to the world will not endeavour to attain the heavenly kingdom either, for he will only recognise the earthly world and its attraction and not believe in a kingdom beyond this world. And yet the path to the kingdom of heaven has to be taken through this earthly world, it cannot be avoided, for the human being lives in this world, he has to cover the last stage of his development on earth, in the midst of the realm which belongs to God's adversary. But he can overcome this kingdom, he can pass through the earthly world without allowing himself to be extraordinarily impressed by it, without coveting it with his senses.... he can experience it and yet be its master....

And it is your task to overcome the world, for it was given to you as a means for your soul to become fully mature therein, to detach itself voluntarily from everything pertaining to the world, because this separation is at the same time also a separation from the one who is lord of this world, and a turning towards the spiritual kingdom and its Lord. Hence it is understandable that anyone enslaving himself to the world will never be able to take possession of the spiritual kingdom, neither in earthly life nor after the human being's death.... it is understandable that the lord of the world will keep him tied up because the human being gives him the right to do so himself, for the separation from his power, the separation from the material world, has to be endeavoured towards and accomplished by the individual himself.

He has to wage battle against himself; he has to be able to go without in order to gain something valuable, he has to resist all temptations during his short lifetime on earth in order to then take possession of the spiritual kingdom with all its glories, which will compensate him a thousand fold for his renunciation on earth.... And he will only do so if he recognises the irrelevance and impermanence of what he deems desirable on earth. Only this realisation will give him the strength to change his will correctly, and he can gain this realisation by merely contemplating the material world .... For he cannot be forced to change his will.... he can only be prompted by experiences into inner contemplation, at which point the result is up to him. And God can only help him by time and again demonstrating the fleeting nature of things, so He allows the destruction of what the human being loves on earth, He intervenes by affecting him painfully, taking from him what his heart is set on.... just to point out to him how worthless the goals of his endeavours are.

But those who learn from such experiences can consider themselves fortunate, for they will gradually change the direction of their will and relinquish the world in order to occupy the spiritual kingdom one day.... But no one should believe that he can make compromises, no one should believe that he can pay homage to the world with impunity.... All striving will have an effect after his death, and if it related to the world then it will result in spiritual death, then he will have relinquished the spiritual kingdom for the sake of earthly gain and the world will have brought him death.... Then he will have handed himself over again to the power of the one in the abyss, and the path of ascent will yet again take an infinitely long period of time....

세상에 복종하는 사람은 누구든지 하늘 나라에 도달할 수 없다.

세상에 조공을 바치는 일은 하늘 나라를 포기하는 일과 같다. 왜냐면 사람이 두 나라를 동시에 얻을 수 없기 때문이다. 세상에 복종하는 사람은 또한 하늘 나라에 도달하기 위한 노력을 하지 않는다. 왜냐면 그들에게는 단지 자극적인 세상의 나라가 있고, 그들은 이 나라의 밖의 나라를 믿지 않기 때문이다. 그러나 하늘 나라를 향하는 길은 이 땅의 세상을 통해 가야만 하고, 이 세상을 피할 수가 없다. 왜냐면 사람이 이 세상에서 살고 있기 때문이다. 사람은 하나님의 대적자에게 속한 나라인 이 땅을 통과하는 자신의 마지막 성장 단계를 거쳐야만 한다. 그러나 그는 이 나라를 극복할 수 있고, 그는 세상으로부터 특별하게 인상을 받지 않으면서, 자신의 감각으로 세상을 갈망하지 않으면서 이 땅의 세상을 통과하여 갈 수 있다. 그는 세상에서 살 수 있지만 그러나 세상을 다스리는 사람이 될 수 있다.

세상을 극복하는 일이 너희의 과제이다. 왜냐면 세상은 바로 너희의 혼이 성장하게 하는 목적과 혼이 자유의지로 세상에 속한 모든 것으로부터 자유롭게 되게 하는 목적으로 너희에게 주어졌고, 세상으로부터 자유롭게 되는 일은 동시에 이 세상의 지배자로부터 자유롭게 되는 일이고, 자신을 영의 나라에게 드리는 일이고, 자신의 주님에게 드리는 일이기 때문이다. 그러므로 자신을 세상의 노예가 되게 하는 사람은 절대로 이 땅에 사는 동안뿐만 아니라, 그의 죽음 후에도 절대로 영의 나라를 소유할 수 없게 되는 일은 이해할 만한 일이고, 사람이 스스로 세상의 지배자에게 권리를 주기 때문에, 세상의 지배자가 그를 가두고 있는 일은 이해할 만한 일이다. 왜냐면 사람이 스스로 세상 권세로부터 자유롭게 되는 일을 추구하고 완성해야만 하고, 물질적인 세상으로부터 자유롭게 되는 일을 추구하고 완성해야만 하기 때문이다.

그는 자기 자신에 대항하여 싸워야만 하고, 더 가치 있는 것을 얻기 위해 포기해야만 한다. 그는 이 땅에서 자신이 포기하는 것을 천 배로 보상해주는 모든 영광을 가진 영의 나라를 차지할 수 있기 위해, 단지 짧은 이 땅에서 사는 동안에 모든 유혹에 저항해야만 한다. 만약에 그가 단지 이 땅에서 그에게 갈망할 만하게 보이는 것이 가치가 없음과 지속성이 없음을 깨닫는다면, 그는 이렇게 행할 것이다. 단지 이런 깨달음이 자신의 의지를 올바른 방향으로 향하게 만드는 능력을 그에게 줄 것이다. 만약 그가 단지 물질의 세계에 대해 생각해본다면, 그는 이런 깨달음을 얻을 수 있다. 왜냐면 그의 의지가 변화되도록 강요받아서는 안 되기 때문이다. 그는 단지 체험을 통해 내적인 관찰을 하도록 자극받을 수 있다.

그러나 어떤 성공을 할지는 그 자신이 정하고, 하나님은 헛된 것을 항상 또 다시 증명해주는 정도로 그를 도울 수 있고, 사람이 이 땅에서 사랑하는 것이 붕괴되게 하는 정도로, 그가 사람의 내면에 가장 고통스럽게 하는 방식으로 접근하는 정도로 그를 도울 수 있고, 항상 단지 그에게 그가 추구하는 것이 얼마나 가치가 없는 것인지 알려 주기 위해 그의 심장이 연연해하는 것을 그에게서 빼앗는 정도로 그를 도울 수 있다.

그러나 이런 체험을 통해 배우는 사람은 자신을 행복한 사람이라고 칭할 수 있다. 왜냐면 그는 그의 의지의 방향을 서서히 바꾸고, 한때 영의 나라를 차지하기 위해 세상을 포기하기 때문이다. 그러나 어느 누구도 타협할 수 있다고 믿어서는 안 되고, 어느 누구도 벌을 받지 않으면서 세상에 굴복할 수 있다고 믿어서는 안 된다. 모든 추구는 자신의 죽음 이 후에 역사가 나타난다. 세상을 추구했다면, 그에게 영적인 죽음이 임하고 그러면 그는 세상의 유익을 위해 영의 나라를 포기한 것이고, 세상이 그에게 죽음을 준 것이다. 그러면 그는 새롭게 깊은 곳에 있는 권세에게 넘겨지고, 높은 곳을 향한 길을 가는데 다시 끝없이 긴 기간이 필요하게 된다.
