Fulfilment of duty.... voluntary or compulsory....
Only that is of value for the higher development of the soul which is striven for and realized of one's own free will. People can be urged to live a life that in itself corresponds to God's will. However, they only act under a certain amount of compulsion. If their own will is not involved, the deeds are invalid, i.e. worthless before God. Every fulfilment of duty certainly means a correct life on earth, but no particular merit for eternity. For what is valued in eternity must have emerged from free will. It is not enough to fulfil certain commandments which are given great importance on earth but which have little or no divine will in them. To fulfil the divine commandment of love from the innermost drive.... this includes everything that is beneficial for the soul's development. You will often be required to fulfil the commandment of love out of necessity.... you will be prompted to do deeds which in themselves correspond to God's will if they are carried out of your own free will. However, the human being should not give himself over to the belief that he has fulfilled the lord's will through these deeds and is absorbed in active neighbourly love.... Only his own will is decisive, and it is only judged to what extent he feels lovingly urged to do it. And that is why people are very often honoured by their fellow human beings for their actions or regarded as pious if their inner thoughts do not correspond to their outer actions. A person can only ever do what is required of him according to human laws, but without being in contact with God. A certain ambition and the desire for recognition are the driving force for the greatest fulfilment of duty, but the development of the soul is called into question, for the innermost instinct of the heart alone is decisive. What the world demands must always serve the preservation of worldly power to a certain degree; however, if it is left to man's discretion, then the purpose is also a noble one. For then their own will can become active. Thus, all coercive measures that have the appearance of charity, as well as the compulsory fulfilment of ecclesiastical commandments, have only the least value before God, but every voluntary compliance with them increases the value....

Cumplimiento del deber.... Voluntario u obligatorio....
Sólo esto es de valor para el desarrollo superior del alma. Por lo que uno se esfuerza y ejecuta por su propia voluntad. Se puede animar a los seres humanos a vivir un vida que corresponda a la voluntad de Dios. Pero entonces ellos sólo actúan bajo una cierta compulsión. Si no está involucrada su propia voluntad, las acciones son inválidas, es decir, sin valor ante Dios. Todo cumplimiento del deber probablemente significa una vida correcta en la tierra, pero ningún mérito especial para la eternidad. Porque lo que se valora en la eternidad debe haber surgido del libre albedrío. No basta con que se cumplan ciertos mandamientos, a los que se les da mucha importancia en la tierra, pero que llevan en ellos poca o ninguna voluntad divina.
Cumplir el mandamiento divino del amor desde el impulso más íntimo.... esto incluye todo lo que favorezca el desarrollo del alma. A menudo se os exige cumplir inevitablemente el mandamiento del amor.... os obligan a realizar acciones que probablemente corresponden a la voluntad de Dios si se llevan a cabo en el libre albedrío. Sin embargo, los seres humanos no deben entregarse a la creencia de que con esto han cumplido la voluntad del Señor y están absortas en la caridad activa.... Sólo su propia voluntad es decisiva, y sólo se evalúa en qué medida se aplica con amor a sus acciones.
Y es por eso que a menudo un hombre es honrado o considerado piadoso por sus semejantes debido a sus acciones, cuyo pensamiento interior no corresponde en absoluto con sus acciones interiores. Un hombre sólo puede hacer esto lo que se le exige según las leyes humanas, pero sin estar en contacto con Dios. hay una cierta ambición y un deseo de reconocimiento que impulsa a uno a mayor cumplimiento del deber, pero el propio desarrollo espiritual está cuestionado, porque sólo el impulso más íntimo del corazón es decisivo.
Lo que el mundo exige siempre debe servir hasta cierto punto para mantener el poder mundano; Sin embargo, si los hombres son libres de hacerlo, entonces el propósito también es noble. Porque entonces la propia voluntad puede volverse activa. Así, que todas las medidas coercitivas que tienen apariencia de caridad, así como el cumplimiento obligatorio de los mandamientos de la Iglesia, tienen sólo el menor valor ante Dios, pero cada cumplimiento voluntario de éstos aumenta el valor....
