Arrogance.... knowledge.... faith....

An insurmountable obstacle to spiritual maturity is a person's arrogant opinion that he has knowledge and therefore no longer needs to be taught, for this person erects such a wall and, as it were, sets barriers to his spirit that cannot be removed until such a person's thinking is completely transformed and he humbly regocnizes his previous wrong thinking. A cup cannot hold clear, pure water as long as it contains any other liquid. And thus, if the human intellect is utilized for knowledge of any kind and one believes to be able to solve spiritual questions with such knowledge, one will hardly deal with spiritual things. And it is therefore very difficult to win over a person who is fully occupied with earthly matters to solve spiritual questions, for every minute seems precious to him for earthly purposes and so he resists what he considers to be useless thinking. He only sees the world and tries to get behind unsolved questions intellectually, and his results are always unimpeachable as long as he can prove them purely intellectually. He rejects research on a spiritual path, and so it is ultimately the work and activity of God that can be made comprehensible to him. And just as little will his spirit be able to make contact with the divine original spirit.... For it remains unawakened despite the greatest worldly knowledge, and thus a person who has the greatest successes to show before the world is small and poor in spiritual knowledge.... Judging soberly, he only sees everything on the outside, he only sees the shell, but not the core.... He sees what is around him, but not its purpose and meaning. He has no visible proof of spiritual assertions, and so he arrogantly stands in defence of everything that spiritual research has achieved. And it is therefore extremely regrettable that spiritual truths find no entry where the human being actually wants to be highly developed, and this solely because he has eliminated faith from his life.... How enormously far a person could go in his knowledge if he wanted to connect the spiritual gift given to him by God, his intellectual thinking, with the deepest faith.... All areas would be opened up to him and all knowledge imparted to him if he could truly believe that God can enlighten his spirit and introduce him to all truth. But spiritual arrogance sets a boundary between worldly and spiritual knowledge.... Spiritual arrogance creates an insurmountable barrier; it is an obstacle that cannot be overcome in any other way than by recognizing one's own inadequacy and, as a result, the deepest inner humility.... Only then can the right path.... the path to truth.... can be travelled....

L’arroganza - Il sapere - La fede

Un insuperabile ostacolo per la maturità spirituale è l’opinione arrogante di un uomo di stare nel sapere e quindi di non aver più bisogno di nessun ammaestramento, perché quest’uomo erige un tale muro e mette per così dire delle barriere al suo spirito, che non possono essere allontanate, prima che il pensare di un tale uomo non si sia totalmente trasformato ed egli riconosca piccolo ed umile il suo falso pensare avuto finora. Un bicchiere non può accogliere dell’acqua chiara, pura, finché contiene un qualunque altro liquido. E se l’intelletto umano viene occupato per un sapere di ogni genere e crede di poter risolvere con un tal sapere anche delle questioni spirituali, non si occuperà quasi con cose spirituali. E così è molto difficile conquistare un uomo pienamente occupato terrenamente per le soluzioni di questioni spirituali, perché a lui ogni minuto sembra prezioso per scopi terreni, e quindi si ribella contro un pensare inutile secondo la sua opinione. Vede soltanto il mondo e cerca di risolvere intellettualmente delle questioni irrisolte, ed i suoi risultati sono sempre intoccabili, per quanto li possa dimostrare nel senso puramente intellettuale. Lui rifiuta una ricerca sulla via spirituale, e così l’Agire dell’Operare di Dio gli viene reso comprensibile per ultimo. Tanto meno il suo spirito potrà prendere contatto con lo Spirito primordiale divino, perché rimane non risvegliato, malgrado il più grande sapere mondano, e quindi l’uomo che ha da mostrare davanti al mondo i più grandi successi, è piccolo e povero nel sapere spirituale. Giudicando sobriamente, lui vede soltanto tutta la vita esteriore, vede soltanto l’involucro, ma non il nucleo. Lui vede ciò che è intorno a lui, ma non il suo scopo e senso. Non ha nessuna dimostrazione visibile di affermazioni spirituali, e quindi nell’arroganza si mette in difesa verso tutto ciò in cui è riuscita la ricerca spirituale. E quindi è estremamente deplorevole, che le Verità spirituali non trovano nessun accesso là dove l’uomo vuole essere davvero altamente sviluppato, e questo solo perché ha escluso la fede dalla sua vita. Quanto immensamente lontano potrebbe arrivare l’uomo nel suo sapere spirituale, con i Doni datigli da Dio, nel suo pensare d’intelletto, se li volesse mettere in collegamento con la fede più profonda. Gli sarebbero dischiusi tutti i campi e trasmesso tutto il sapere, se potesse credere veramente, che Dio può illuminare il suo spirito e guidarlo in tutta la Verità. Ma l’arroganza spirituale mette un confine fra il sapere mondano e spirituale. L’arroganza spirituale edifica una barriere insuperabile, è un ostacolo, che non può essere vinto diversamente se non attraverso la conoscenza della propria imperfezione e da ciò la seguente profondissima umiltà interiore. Solo allora può essere percorsa la retta via, la via verso la Verità.
